-
REMOVE THE COTTER PIN AND CLEVIS PIN THAT ATTACH EACH DOG ARM TO THE SPIDER.
-
REMOVE THE DOG ARMS FROM THE ASSEMBLY.
-
FOR FLUSH SCUTTLES, REMOVE THE SPINDLE COLLAR SET SCREW AND UNSCREW THE COLLAR ITSELF.
-
UNTHREAD THE SPIDER FROM THE SPINDLE.
-
REMOVE THE SPINDLE FROM THE SPINDLE SLEEVE.
-
USING A BRASS PIPE OR ROUND STOCK OF APPROXIMATELY 5/8" DIAMETER, DRIVE OUT THE TWO FLANGED SPINDLE BUSHINGS FROM THE SLEEVE.
-
SCRAPE RUST, PAINT AND OLD GREASE FROM THE SPINDLE SLEEVE USING A FLAT TIPPED PUNCH AND A 1" DIAMETER ROTARY STAINLESS STEEL WIRE BRUSH CHUCKED IN AN ELECTRIC DRILL. ALSO CLEAN WITH #320 GRID ALUMINUM OXIDE CLOTH.
-
REMOVE ALL TRACES OF PACKING AND GRIT WITH A RAG AND SOLVENT.
-
DOG ADJUSTING SCREW HAVE A LOCKING DEVICE THAT CONSISTS OF A SMALL NYLON PLUG PRESSED INTO A HOLE IN THE BODY OF THE BOLT. THIS DEVICE PREVENTS THE BOLT FROM BACKING OUT AFTER THE DOGGING ARM HAS BEEN ADJUSTED. IF THE BOLT CAN BE SCREWED IN ALL THE WAY BY HAND, IT IS WORN AND PROBABLY SHOULD BE REPLACED.
-
REMOVE THE DOG ADJUSTING SCREW FROM EACH DOG REST. IF THE BOLT IS FROZEN, REMOVE THE GASKET AND HEAT THE DOG REST WITH AN OXYACETYLENE TORCH.
-
IF THE THREADS IN A DOG REST ARE SEVERELY DAMAGED, REPLACE THE DOG REST. TO REMOVE THE DOG REST, BURN IT OFF WITH A TORCH AND GRIND THE SURFACE FLUSH. THEN WELD ON A NEW DOG REST IN EXACTLY THE SAME POSITION. TAKE CARE TO ORIENT THE NEW DOG REST AT THE PROPER ANGLE TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE DOG ARM TRAVEL.
-
CHASE THE THREADS IN EACH DOG REST WITH A 5/8-18 UNF TAP.
-
COAT THE DOG ADJUSTING SCREW THREADS WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND.
-
EXAMINE ALL OTHER PARTS FOR WEAR OR DAMAGE AND REPLACE PARTS AS NEEDED.
-
CHASE THE SPINDLE THREADS WITH A 3/4-16 UNF TAPE AND DIE.
-
REPLACE THE SPINDLE AND THE SPIDER IF:
-
THE SPINDLE IS BENT OR FULL OF DEEP SCRATCHES
-
THE ACME THREADS ARE SO BADLY WORN THAT A NEW SPIDER, WHEN SCREWED ONTO THE SPINDLE, WOBBLES EXCESSIVELY, OR
-
THE MACHINED FLANGE HAS ANY CRACKS OR IS COMPLETELY BROKEN AWAY.
-
EXAMAINE THE DOG CAM WELDED TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SCUTTLE. IF IT IS WORN, BENT OR BROKEN, REPLACE IT TAKING CARE TO WELD THE NEW DOG CAM IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE. NOTE THAT THE LONGER OF THE TWO SECTIONS OF THE CAM IS THE END THAT SHOULD BE WELDED. NOTE: ALUMINUM SCUTTLES NOW USE A NEW STYLE STAINLESS STEEL CAM THAT IS ATTACHED WITH A MOUNTING PLATE THAT IS SCREWED INTO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SCUTTLE.
-
CLEAN ALL PARTS WITH A RAG AND SOLVENT.
-
PRIME THE DOG ARMS WITH FORMULA 150 AND THEN PAINT WITH FORMULA 151.
