SCUTTLE INSTALLATION
INSTALL A SCUTTLE ONLY AFTER IT HAS BEEN PROPERLY ASSEMBLED AND COMPLETELY INSPECTED. THE PROCEDURE VARIES SLIGHTLY DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE SCUTTLE IS RAISED OR FLUSH.
THE BASIC METHOD FOR INSTALLING A FULLY ASSEMBLED SCUTTLE ONTO ITS COAMING
-
INITIAL STEPS FOR RAISED SCUTTLES:
-
PLACE THE SCUTTLE IN THE COAMING.
-
INSERT THE HINGE PINS AND LOCK COLLARS. THE BEVELED SIDE OF LOCK COLLARS MUST FACE OUT.
-
INSTALL THE BRACE LINK PIN AND COLLAR. PEEN THE END OF THE PIN WITH A BALL PEEN HAMMER TO LOCK THE PIN TO THE COLLAR.
-
INITIAL STEPS FOR FLUSH SCUTTLES:
-
CLEAN THE RECESSED AREAS AROUND THE SCUTTLE OPENING TO REMOVE ANY DEBRIS AND CORROSION. PRIME AND PAINT AS NEEDED USING FORMULA 150 PRIMER AND FORMULA 151 TOP COAT.
-
REPLACE THE HINGE PINS AND PEEN OVER THE COUNTERSUNK END WITH A BACKUP HAMMER AND BALL PEEN HAMMER.
-
ATTACH THE BRACE LINK TO THE BRACE PAD HINGE BLOCK WITH A NEW PIN. PEEN OVER THE COUNTERSUNK END TO LOCK IT IN PLACE.
-
LAY THE HINGE CLOCKS OVER THE SCREW HOLES IN THE SCUTTLE RECESS.
-
PLACE THE SCUTTLE IN THE FRAME OVER THE HINGE BLOCKS AND REPLACE THE UPPER HINGE PLATES AND FLATHEAD SCREWS. COAT THE HINGE BLOCKS AND BRACE LINK WITH WIRE ROPE GREASE.
-
STAND BELOW THE SCUTTLE. CLOSE AND DOG DOWN THE CLOSURE ABOUT HALFWAY.
-
SET THE DOG ADJUSTING SCREWS SO THE DOG ARMS JUST BEGIN TO PULL DOWN ON THE SCUTTLE.
-
PERFORM A CHALK TEST AND READJUST AS NEEDED, TESTING WITH EACH ADJUSTMENT.
-
IF THE SCUTTLE USES TRADITIONAL BEARINGS, INSERT THE PACKING PLUNGER AND STICK PACKING. THIS IS NOT NECESSARY IF THE SCUTTLE USES SELF-LUBRICATING BEARINGS, BUT LEAVE THE PACKING PLUNGER IN PLACE.
-
OPERATE THE SCUTTLE TO SEE THAT IT DOES NOT BIND. IF THE HANDWHEEL IS DIFFICULT TO TURN, OPEN THE SCUTTLE AND TAP THE SIDES OF THE HANDWHEELS FROM ALL FOUR COMPASS POINTS WITH A RAWHIDE HAMMER.
