SCUTTLE HANDLE INSTALLATION AND FINAL SCUTTLE ASSEMBLY
FLUSH AND RAISED SCUTTLES EACH HAVE SPECIALIZED DOGGING MECHANISMS. HOWEVER, ONCE THESE PARTS OF A SCUTTLE ARE INSTALLED, THE PROCEDURE FOR FINAL ASSEMBLY IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME FOR ALL SCUTTLES.
HANDLE INSTALLATION FOR RAISED SCUTTLES
-
COAT THE INSIDE OF THE SPINDLE SLEEVE WITH A THIN COAT OF SILICONE COMPOUND.
-
COAT THE LOWER FLANGED BUSHING WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND TAP IT INTO PLACE IN THE SLEEVE WITH A RAWHIDE HAMMER.
-
COAT THE SPINDLE BEARING SURFACE AND ACME THREAD WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND THREAD THE SPIDER ONTO THE SPINDLE ABOUT HALFWAY. THE SPIDER BOSS SHOULD FACE AWAY FROM THE SPINDLE FLANGE.
-
INSERT THE SPINDLE INTO THE SCUTTLE SPINDLE SLEEVE.
-
PASS THE CRESCENT SHAPED SLOT IN THE SPIDER OVER THE DOG CAM. THERE SHOULD BE A LOOSE FIT BETWEEN THE CAM AND THE SLOT. IF THE FIT IS TOO TIGHT, GRIND OR FILE THE SLOT TO FIT. YOU MAY NEED TO TAP THE DOG CAM TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER WITH A HAMMER TO HELP FIT THE SLOT IN THE SPIDER OVER THE DOG CAM.
-
IF THE MECHANISM HAS TRADITIONAL BEARINGS, WRAP ABOUT 12" OF STRING PACKING AROUND THE SPINDLE STARTING AT THE TOP OF THE SCUTTLE. PUSH THE PACKING INTO THE SPINDLE SLEEVE WITH A SCREWDRIVER.
-
COAT THE UPPER FLANGED BUSHING WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND INSTALL IT.
-
COAT THE SPINDLE HANDWHEEL NUT THREADS WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND AND INSTALL THE UPPER HANDWHEEL. (CHECK THE ARROW ON THE HANDWHEEL TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE UPPER ONE.)
-
INSTALL A 5/8-11 UNC STAINLESS STEEL LOCK NUT AND TIGHTEN IT.
-
OPTIONAL: INSTALL A STAINLESS STEEL 5/8-11 UNC ACORN STYLE CAP NUT ON TOP OF THE LOCK NUT.
HANDLE INSTALLATION FOR FLUSH SCUTTLES
-
COAT THE INSIDE OF THE SPINDLE SLEEVE WITH A THIN COAT OF SILICONE COMPOUND.
-
COAT THE LOWER FLANGED BUSHING WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND TAP IT INTO PLACE IN THE SLEEVE WITH A RAWHIDE HAMMER.
-
COAT THE SPINDLE BEARING SURFACE AND ACME THREAD WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND THREAD THE SPIDER ONTO THE SPINDLE ABOUT HALFWAY. THE SPIDER BOSS SHOULD FACE AWAY FROM THE SPINDLE FLANGE.
-
INSERT THE SPINDLE INTO THE SCUTTLE SPINDLE SLEEVE.
-
COAT THE SPINDLE COLLAR THREADS WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND AND THREAD THE COLLAR ONTO THE SPINDLE UNTIL ITS TOP SURFACE IS FLUSH WITH THE TOP OF THE SPINDLE.
-
IF YOU HAVE REPLACED WITH THE SPINDLE OR SPINDLE COLLAR, YOU WILL NEED TO DRILL AND TAP A NEW SET SCREW HOLE. DRILL AND TAPE A COMPLETELY NEW HOLD USING A NUMBER 3 DRILL AND 1/4-28 UNF TAP.
-
ALIGN THE TWO HALVES OF THE SET SCREW HOLE IN THE COLLAR AND THE SPINDLE. COAT THE SET SCREW WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND AND INSTALL IT.
FINAL ASSEMBLY OF RAISED AND FLUSH SCUTTLES
-
FOR EACH DOG ARM, INSERT THE DOG REST SPRING AND TWO DOG REST SLIDE PLATES INTO THE DOG REST. ONE SLIDE PLATE SITS ON TOP OF THE SPRING AND RIDES AGAINST THE UPPER SURFACE OF THE DOG ARM. THE OTHER SLIDE PLATE RISES AGAINST THE LOWER SIDE OF THE DOG ARM AND RESTS ON TOP OF THE END OF THE DOG ADJUSTING SCREW.
-
INSERT THE DOG ARM BETWEEN THE TWO SIDE PLATES, SLIDING IT UP AND INTO THE SPIDER. MAKE SURE THE BEVELED SIDE OF THE DOG ARM FACES TOWARD THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SCUTTLE OR THE COAMING.
-
PASS THE HEADED CLEVIS PIN THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE DOG ARM AND SPIDER.
-
ALIGN THE HOLE IN THE CLEVIS PIN WITH THE SMALL HOLE IN THE DOG COLLAR AND INSERT A 3/32" X 1" CRES OR BRASS COTTER PIN. BEND OVER THE LONG LEG OF THE COTTER PIN.
-
REPEAT STEPS 1 THROUGH 4 FOR THE REMAINING DOG ARM ASSEMBLIES.
-
COAT THE DOG ARM ADJUSTING SCREW THREADS WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND AND INSTALL THEM BUT DO NOT TIGHTEN THEM YET. TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTING SCREWS ONLY AFTER ALL ASSEMBLY AND ADJUSTMENT OPERATIONS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED AND YOU HAVE DONE A CHALK TEST.
-
FOR RAISED SCUTTLES, INSTALL THE LOWER HANDWHEEL, WASHER AND LOCK NUT. USE ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND ON THE SPINDLE THREADS.
