INDIVIDUAL DOG REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT
WHILE AN INDIVIDUAL DOG IS LESS COMPLEX THAN THE DOGGING MECHANISM ON A QUICK ACTING CLOSURE, ANY INDICATION THAT THE DOG IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY WILL MOST LIKELY REQUIRE A COMPLETE INSPECTION, DISASSEMBLY AND REPAIR.
INDIVIDUAL DOG DISASSEMBLY
-
REMOVE THE SELF-LOCKING NUT OR TWO JAM NUTS AND THE DOG HANDLE FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR.
-
REMOVE THE STRAIGHT BUSHING AND COMPRESSION SPRING FROM THE SPINDLE SLEEVE.
-
USE AN ALLEN WRENCH TO LOOSEN THE SETSCREW ON THE FLANGED BUSHING AND REMOVE THE FLANGED BUSHING FROM THE SPINDLE SLEEVE.
-
FOR STEEL DOORS, SCRAPE THE RUST, PAINT AND OLD GREASE FROM THE SPINDLE SLEEVE. (A ROTARY STAINLESS STEEL WIRE BRUSH CHUCKED IN A POWER DRILL DOES THIS WELL. SO DOES #320 GRIT ALUMINUM OXIDE CLOTH.)
-
USING A RAG AND SOLVENT, BE SURE TO REMOVE ALL TRACES OF PACKING AND ANY GRIT LEFT FROM THE CLEANING PROCESS.
-
CLEAN THE SET SCREW HOLE IN THE SPINDLE SLEEVE (USING A 12-28-3 UNF TAP IF NECESSARY) AND COAT THE INSIDE OF THE SLEEVE WITH A THIN LAYER OF SILICONE COMPOUND.
-
INSPECT THE BUSHINGS FOR WEAR TO DETERMINE IF THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED.
-
CLEAN THE DOG SHAFT WITH SOLVENT AND #320 GRIT ALUMINUM OXIDE CLOTH.
-
REMOVE THE PACKING PLUNGER. IF THE THREAD ON THE SPINDLE IS DAMAGED, RETAP IT WITH A 5/16-24-3 UNF TAP. REMOVE ANY CHIPS OR DIRT IN THE SCREW HOLE.
-
IF THE CLOSURE USES TRADITIONAL BEARINGS YOU MUST REPLACE THE PACKING PLUNGER WITH A NEW ONE IF THE OLD ONE IS BADLY WORN OR DAMAGED. IF THE CLOSURE USES SELF-LUBRICATING BEARINGS, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PACKING PLUNGER.
INDIVIDUAL DOG REPLACEMENT
-
WHEN INSTALLING NEW SELF-LUBRICATED BUSHINGS, INSTALL THE PLASTIC PLUG IN THE PARTS KIT INTO THE HOLE IN THE DOG SHAFT.
-
SCRIBE A LINE ON THE FACE OF THE FLANGED BUSHING TO INDICATE THE LOCATION OF THE SET SCREW HOLE.
-
DAUB THE FLANGED BUSHING WITH A THIN COATING OF SILICONE COMPOUND AND INSERT IT INTO THE SPINDLE SLEEVE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR. ALIGN THE SET SCREW HOLE WITH THE HOLE IN THE DOOR SLEEVE.
-
COAT THE SET SCREW WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND, INSERT IT AND LOCK THE BUSHING IN PLACE.
-
COAT THE DOG SHAFT WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND INSERT IT INTO THE SPINDLE SLEEVE.
-
SLIP A COMPRESSION SPRING ONTO THE SPINDLE FROM THE FRONT SIDE OF THE DOOR. (WITH TRADITIONAL BEARINGS, USE ONLY PHOSPHOR BRONZE SPRINGS. WITH SELF-LUBRICATING BEARINGS, USE ONLY STAINLESS STEEL SPRINGS.
-
IF THE CLOSURE USES TRADITIONAL BEARINGS, WRAP 6" STRING PACKING AROUND THE SPINDLE BETWEEN THE SPRING COILS.
-
COAT THE STRAIGHT BUSHING WITH SILICONE COMPOUND AND INSTALL IT FROM THE FRONT SIDE OF THE DOOR. MAKE SURE IT SLIDES SMOOTHLY UNDER SPRING TENSION.
-
INSTALL THE DOG HANDLE AND MOUNT ONE JAM NUT OR SELF-LOCKING NUT LIGHTLY, LETTING IT TAKE ONLY 3 THREAD TURNS.
-
-
-
ON CLOSURES THAT USE JAM NUTS, INSTALL THE SECOND JAM NUT ON EACH CLOSURE.
