GASKET REPLACEMENT
REMOVING THE OLD GASKET AND CLEANING ITS GASKET CHANNEL IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PROPERLY INSERTING A NEW ONE.
HOW TO REMOVE A GASKET
-
LOCATE THE GASKET JOINT.
-
ON ONE SIDE OF THE GASKET JOINT, MAKE A V-SHAPED CUT COMPLETELY THROUGH THE GASKET WITH A RAZOR KNIFE.
-
PRY THE FORKED END OF THE CUT GASKET OUT OF THE CHANNEL WITH A SCREWDRIVER AND GRAB IT WITH VISE-GRIP PLIERS.

PULL THE GASKET OUT OF THE CHANNEL, TAKING CARE TO NEVER PULL DIRECTLY TOWARD YOURSELF IN CASE THE VISE-GRIP SLIPS OFF THE GASKET.

CLEAN THE GASKET CHANNEL TO REMOVE ALL DEBRIS AND CORROSION. AN ELECTRIC DRILL CHUCKED WITH A STAINLESS STEEL WIRE BRUSH IS A GOOD TOOL FOR THIS.

IF THE DOOR IS STEEL, PRIME THE GASKET CHANNEL WITH FORMULA 150.

WHEN THE PRIMER IS DRY, APPLY A TOP COAT OF FORMULA 151.
INSTALLING A GASKET ON CLOSURES WITH A C-SHAPED CHANNEL

USING GASKET MATERIAL THAT HAS A BEVELED EDGE, CUT A LENGTH TO GO AROUND THE DOOR PLUS 6".

APPLY SILICONE COMPOUND TO THE ENTIRE GASKET AND TO THE INSIDE OF THE CHANNEL.

BEGIN INSTALLING THE GASKET AT THE TOP CENTER OF A CLOSURE OR THE POINT OPPOSITE THE HINGES. ON RECTANGULAR CLOSURES, ALWAYS START ON A STRAIGHT SECTION. CLAMP THE STARTING END IN PLACE WITH VICE GRIP PLIERS.

USING A BLUNT TOOL SUCH AS A WIDE SCREWDRIVER THAT HAS ITS EDGES AND CORNERS GROUND OFF, PRESS THE GASKET INTO THE CHANNEL. AFTER EACH FOOT, APPLY BACK PRESSURE TO ALLOW THE GASKET TO RESUME IT INITIAL SHAPE. YOU MAY NEED ADDITIONAL CLAMPS OR VICE GRIPS TO HOLD THE GASKET IN PLACE.

FOR RUBBER GASKETS, MIL-R-900, TRIM BOTH ENDS OF THE GASKET AT 45 DEGREES AND TO A LENGTH THAT ALLOWS AN OVERLAP OF 1". FOR SILICONE GASKETS, AA-59588, TRIM BOTH ENDS OF THE GASKET SQUARE AND TO A LENGTH THAT ALLOWS AN OVERLAP OF 1".

CLEAN THE MATING SURFACES AND APPLY SEALING COMPOUND TO THE JOINT.
INSTALLING A GASKET ON CLOSURES WITH A U-SHAPED CHANNEL

CUT A LENGTH OF GASKET MATERIAL TO GO AROUND THE DOOR PLUS 6".

APPLY SEALING COMPOUND TO THE BACK OF THE GASKET.

BEGIN INSTALLING THE GASKET AT THE TOP CENTER OF A CLOSURE OR THE POINT OPPOSITE THE HINGES. ON RECTANGULAR CLOSURES, ALWAYS START ON A STRAIGHT SECTION. CLAMP THE STARTING END IN PLACE WITH VICE GRIP PLIERS.

DOG THE CLOSURE AND ALLOW THE ADHESIVE TO SET.
