DOG SPINDLE LUBRICATION
THERE ARE THREE WAYS DOG SPINDLES AND THEIR BUSHINGS ARE LUBRICATED. SOME HAVE PACKING PLUNGERS AND USE STICK PACKING AS A LUBRICANT. SOME DO NOT HAVE PACKING PLUNGERS AND USE STRING AND STICK PACKING AS A LUBRICANT. THESE MECHANISMS INCLUDE TYPES WITH SPRINGS AND TYPES WITHOUT SPRINGS. FINALLY, SOME HAVE SELF-LUBRICATED BUSHINGS AND DO NOT HAVE LUBRICANTS THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED OR REFRESHED.
HOW TO LUBRICATE SPINDLES WITH PACKING PLUNGERS
-
REMOVE THE PACKING PLUNGER FROM THE SPINDLE.
-
REMOVE STICK PACKING FROM ITS PACKAGING. NOTE: STICK PACKING COMES PACKED BETWEEN CORRUGATED CARDBOARD STRIPS. DIP THE STRIP IN COLD, FRESH WATER BEFORE REMOVING THE PACKING STICKS TO PREVENT THE STICK PACKING FROM ADHERING TO YOUR FINGERS.
-
USING A 1/4" ROD OR SIMILAR TOOL, PUSH THE PACKING INTO THE SHAFT OPENING.
-
REINSERT THE PACKING PLUNGER AND TIGHTEN IT WITH A SCREWDRIVER UNTIL EXCESS PACKING APPEARS AROUND THE SPINDLE.
HOW TO LUBRICATE SPINDLES WITHOUT PACKING PLUNGERS ON CLOSURES THAT HAVE A SPRING
-
SLIDE THE DOG SPINDLE WITH THE FLANGED BUSHING INTO THE FRAME SLEEVE AND FOLLOW IT WITH THE COMPRESSION SPRING.
-
WRAP ABOUT 6" OF STRING PACKING AROUND THE SPINDLE SHAFT BETWEEN THE COILS OF THE SPRING.
-
FORCE THE SPRING INTO THE FRAME SLEEVE, PUSHING IT WITH THE STRAIGHT BUSHING AND THEN WITH THE DOG.
-
USE A PACKING PLUNGER TO INSERT JUST ENOUGH STICK PACKING TO FORM A SEAL.
HOW TO LUBRICATE SPINDLES WITHOUT PACKING PLUNGERS ON CLOSURES THAT DO NOT HAVE A SPRING
-
WRAP 12" OF STRING PACKING AROUND THE SPINDLE.
-
SLOWLY FORCE THE PACKING INTO THE FRAME WITH THE STRAIGHT BUSHING AND THEN THE DOG.
-
USE A PACKING PLUNGER TO INSERT JUST ENOUGH STICK PACKING TO FORM A SEAL.
