BUSHING REPLACEMENT: TRADITIONAL BUSHINGS
THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS APPLY TO TRADITIONAL BUSHINGS. WE HAVE AN ADDITIONAL PAGE WITH MORE DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT INSTALLING SELF-LUBRICATING BUSHINGS.
REPLACING TRADITIONAL SPINDLE SLEEVE BUSHINGS
-
REMOVE ALL TRACES OF PACKING WITH A RAG AND SUITABLE SOLVENT.
-
FOR STEEL DOORS, ALSO SCRAPE ANY RUST, PAINT OR OLD GREASE FROM THE SPINDLE SLEEVES. (A ROTARY STAINLES STEEL WIRE BRUSH IN A POWER DRILL DOES THIS WELL.)
-
CLEAN THE SET SCREW HOLE IN EACH SPINDLE SLEEVE WITH A 12-28 UNF TAP.
-
COVER THE INSIDE OF EACH SPINDLE SLEEVE WITH A THIN COATING OF SILICONE COMPOUND.
-
FOR ALL BUSHING REPLACEMENTS EXCEPT THOSE ON QA HANDLES, SCRIBE A LINE OF THE FACE OF EACH FLANGED BUSHING TO INDICATE THE LOCATION OF THE SET SCREW HOLE.
-
DAUB BUSHING WITH A THIN COATING OF SILICONE COMPOUND AND INSERT ONE INTO EACH SPINDLE SLEEVE FROM THE LINKAGE SIDE OF THE DOOR. ALIGN THE HOLE IN EACH BUSHING WITH THE SET SCREW HOLE IN THE DOOR SLEEVE.
-
COAT EACH SET SCREW WITH ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND. INSERT EACH SET SCREW INTO ITS HOLE AND LOCK THE BUSHING TO THE SLEEVE (EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF QA HANDLES).
-
IF THE SET SCREW HOLE IS WORN OUT, REMOVE THE FLANGED BUSHING AND DRILL AND TAP A NEW HOLE USING A NUMBER 14 DRILL AND 12-28 UNF TAP. USE THE NEW HOLE TO SECURE THE BUSHING. ALTERNATIVELY, TAP AN OVERSIZE HOLE IN THE SLEEVE AND USE A LARGER SET SCREW. FOR EXAMPLE, USE A NUMBER 7 DRILL AND A 1/4-20 UNC TAP.
