DOOR DOG ADJUSTMENT

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO ADJUST THE DOGS ON WATERTIGHT DOORS, ONE, WHICH WE RECOMMEND, REQUIRES REMOVAL OF THE GASKET.  THE OTHER, IN WHICH THE GASKET IS LEFT IN PLACE, ALSO WORKS BUT IT IS USUALLY NOT AS ACCURATE.

ADJUSTMENT WITH GASKET REMOVAL

  1. GET A GAUGE BLOCK 3/8" THICK X 1/2" WIDE X 6" LONG MADE FROM 3/8" FLAT BAR STOCK.

  2. LOOSEN ALL JAM NUTS OR, FOR AIRTIGHT DOORS, SELF-LOCKING NUTS AND HINGE ADJUSTING SCREWS.

  3. REMOVE THE EXISTING GASKET (WHICH YOU CAN REINSTALL AT THE END OF THIS PROCEDURE IF IT IS IN SATISFACTORY CONDITION).

  4. PLACE THE GAUGE BLOCK IN THE GASKET CHANNEL DIRECTLY BEHIND A DOOR WEDGE.  USING TWO 1/2" LONG PIECES OF GASKET MATERIAL, SECURE THE GAUGE BLOCK IN THE GASKET CHANNEL.

  5. CLOSE THE DOOR AND DOG IT DOWN.

  6. TIGHTEN THE FIRST JAM NUT OR SELF LOCKING NUT UNTIL THE KNIFE EDGE HITS HARD AGAINST THE GAUGE BLOCK.  FOR AIRTIGHT DOORS, TIGHTEN THE HINGE ADJUSTING SCREW WITH AN ALLEN WRENCH UNTIL THE KNIFE EDGE HITS HARD AGAINST THE GAUGE BLOCK.

  7. WHERE JAM NUTS ARE USED, TIGHTEN THE SECOND JAM NUT SECURELY AGAINST THE FIRST JAM NUT.  FOR AIRTIGHT DOORS, HOLD THE SCREW IN PLACE WITH THE ALLEN WRENCH AND TIGHTEN THE HINGE ADJUSTING SCREW LOCK NUT.

  8. OPEN THE DOOR AND REPEAT STEPS 5 THROUGH 7 FOR EACH DOG.

  9. REPLACE THE GASKET.

ADJUSTMENT WITHOUT GASKET REMOVAL

  1. LOOSEN ALL JAM NUTS OR, FOR AIRTIGHT DOORS, SELF-LOCKING NUTS AND HINGE ADJUSTING SCREWS.

  2. CLOSE THE DOOR BUT DO NOT DOG IT DOWN.

  3. IF THERE IS WARPAGE BETWEEN THE DOOR PANEL AND THE FRAME, THE GASKET WILL NOT CONTACT THE KNIFE EDGE EVENLY.  IF THAT IS THE CASE, START THE DOG ALIGNMENT IN THE AREA WHERE THE GASKET FIRST CONTACTS THE KNIFE EDGE.

  4. INSERT A STRIP OF PAPER BETWEEN THE GASKET AND THE KNIFE EDGE AND DOG THE DOOR.

  5. TIGHTEN THE FIRST JAM NUT OR SELF LOCKING NUT UNTIL THE PAPER CANNOT BE EASILY TUGGED OUT FROM BETWEEN THE KNIFE EDGE AND THE GASKET.  MAKE SURE THE DOG IS IN CONTACT WITH THE DOG WEDGE.  (FOR INDIVIDUALLY DOGGED DOORS, THE PROCEDURE WILL REQUIRE ONE PERSON ON EACH SIDE OF THE DOOR.)

  6. TIGHTEN THE FIRST JAM NUT OR SELF LOCKING NUT AN ADDITIONAL 1-1/8 TURNS TO ACHIEVE 1/8" GASKET COMPRESSION.

  7. WHERE JAM NUTS ARE USED, TIGHTEN THE SECOND JAM NUT AGAINST THE FIRST.

  8. REPEAT STEPS 4 THOUGH 7 FOR EACH DOG.

  9. FOR AIRTIGHT DOORS, ALSO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  10. ADJUST EACH HINGE BY INSERTING A STRIP OF PAPER BETWEEN THE GASKET AND KNIFE EDGE BEHIND EACH HINGE.

  11. DOG THE DOOR.

  12. TIGHTEN EACH HINGE ADJUSTING SCREW UNTIL THE PAPER CANNOT BE EASILY TUGGED OUT.  THEN TIGHTEN EACH HINGE ADJUSTING SCREW AN ADDITIONAL 1-3/8 TURNS TO ACHIEVE A 1/8" GASKET COMPRESSION.

  13. HOLD THE SCREW IN PLACE WITH THE ALLEN WRENCH AND TIGHTEN THE HINGE ADJUSTING SCREW LOCK NUT.
